Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair Transplant Surgery in Turkey

Essential Information to Know Before and After

One of the most common occurrences to affect the majority of the population of the world, at any age, besides aging, is hair loss or hair fall. This is something that happens with both men and women. Because of the high demand for solutions to rectify personal issues, such as hair loss using various methods of hair transplant surgery specifically, the medical and technology sectors have created various ways to help those who suffer from it.

These methods include various techniques to help restore hair growth and one of the most popular countries that people frequent to get this implemented is Turkey. As an effective method for dealing with hair loss, Turkey has stepped ahead of its time in providing people with a few different techniques that they can choose from depending on a few factors. This and more will be discussed in-depth below.

Why Are Hair Transplant Procedures So Popular in Turkey?

One of the main reasons why people flock to this part of the world to rectify their hair loss is the cost. Turkey has not only some of the most cutting-edge technology when it comes to hair transplants, but it also has the most competitive prices in the world.

Prices are much more affordable among the growing number of women and men compared to any other part of the world including European regions. To put it into numbers, Turkey’s hair transplant costs are almost 70% cheaper than anywhere else.

In addition, the clinics that offer this service are high-end establishments, kitted with some of the best industry-standard technologies available. We take a look at some of the available options below.

The Average Costs of Transplants

According to statistics, the average cost of hair transplant depending on the chosen method, and the number of grafts inserted, is only a third of the costs in other regions such as Europe or the United Kingdom.

A medical graft is living tissue that is surgically removed from one part of the body and relocated onto another part. In this case, the graft is the strip of skin that is extracted from either the sides of your head or the back and has hair follicles on it to be used in another location on your scalp.

Prices can range from £1,200 to £2,5000. This includes methods starting from the most common one FUE (Follicular unit extraction) to DHI (Direct Hair Implantation), Manual FUE, and Sapphire FUE transplants. The good news is, the majority of the well-established clinics, offer their patients an ‘all-inclusive package which includes everything from the surgery to free accommodation, all transfers, and this is not affected whether you get more or fewer grafts.  There are also no hidden costs so affordability is eminent for their patients.

The Difference Between Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) in Turkey

The cause of hair loss in men and women could be a number of different medical conditions, however, one of the most common ones is known as ‘androgenetic alopecia’ also known as female or male pattern hair loss.

Common Hair transplant methods are typically based on two methods, namely:

  • Follicular unit excision (FUE)
  • Follicular unit transplantation (FUT)

Follicular unit extraction (FUE): The specialist will use a minuscule punch instrument to extract follicles from a part of the back of your scalp or the ‘donor area.’ It may lead to some scarring but is less visible under the hair, and does not necessitate stitches for this.

Follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS): The surgeon will remove a strip of skin from the back of your scalp (the donor area) and close it with stitches. A microscope is used to disperse this donor skin into the existing tiny follicular units on your scalp, each one containing either one or several hair follicles, this is then inserted into the chosen area.

There is a third version of this and a more advanced practice known as NeoGraft Hair Restoration. This has not yet taken over the markets but is an option to consider. The best advice would be to speak to a medical professional regarding this.

A Modern Solution - NeoGraft Hair Restoration in Turkey

As a partly-automated version of FUE, the practice NeoGraft Hair Restoration is slowly becoming a popular method in many clinics. It is the most up-to-date version and requires some of the latest technologies on the market.

Suffice to say, not every clinic can afford it or has the resources to pull it off. However, as it has shown the more effective and trusted results, of the two – FUE and FUT, it mitigates the issue of human error that most other surgeries are at risk of.

During the transplant procedure, the physician removes individual hair follicles from the scalp, manually, from either the sides of the head or the back. After which a series of incisions are made in the sections where the balding is occurring before inserting the new hair.

This is primarily the only manual part of the process, and during the rest of the stages, a suction-type wand is used to remove the hair follicles. There is no need to make an incision for the new follicles and this tool is used instead.

As a less invasive and quicker option, one of the lucrative benefits of this system is that it reduces both the damage caused to the hair follicles, as well as the trauma associated with it, in comparison to the FUT and FUE alternatives. The trauma caused to the follicles can in some cases hinder the growth of the hair, so negating this, betters the chances of survival rate.

There is also the benefit of fewer surgical complications which are typically related to the FUT surgery solution. There is also no need for staples or stitches with NeoGraft as the automation steps in and any errors regarding damage to blood vessels or nerves are mitigated.

Typically, other procedures take several days to complete as well as using large amounts of grafts, however with this modern technique the length of time it takes can be anywhere between 4 to 10 hours only.

NeoGraft Transplantation Procedure

During the surgery the below is what you may expect:

  1. The specialist shaves your hair either in a section or entirely. Depending on the area from where the hair follicles will be harvested.
  2. A local anesthetic is applied to your scalp. In some cases, if you would like, they can offer you a mild relaxing sedative to help you relax during the procedure.
  3. Once this is done and your scalp is numb enough, they will extract the hair follicles using the special suction wand, as mentioned above, which uses a pneumonic pressure.
  4. Once done, the surgeon implants these sacs into the balding parts of your scalp using the tool.
  5. Once everything is completed as desired, they will apply a dressing to the extracted or donor site to help manage any bleeding.

What Is Hair Transplant in Turkey?

Firstly, let’s look at the basics of what a hair transplant is and how it is performed. For many individuals, a rectifying technique such as this can help bring back what looks like a complete head of hair. If balding or your hair thinning at the top is something that you cannot live with and it bothers you, then one of the best ways to fix this is through these means.

It is, however, always best to speak to your general practitioner, or a professional medical advisor to discuss the possibilities and the procedure involved. If they recommend this, then the below guide will give you a brief idea of how it is performed.

A hair transplant is a type of surgery that moves your existing hair to areas on your scalp that have none or that are thinning. Hair transplants have been done for decades, and as early as the 1950s in the United States. And in fact, the ‘modern techniques’ started way earlier in Japan in the 1930s.

Suffice to say that the techniques have changed drastically since then making it more precise, quick, and easier for both the doctors, as well as the patients. How they go about doing it has been elaborated below:

  1. First, the surgeon or doctor cleans your scalp with a mild but effective cleaner, they then inject a local anesthetic to numb your scalp.
  2. They will then decide between two specific methods i.e. follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS).
  3. FUSS involves removing a strip of skin from your head (known as the donor area), not larger than 10 inches, which they keep aside and will be sewn back on at a later stage. This area will not be visible and is hidden in the back of your head under a bunch of hair.
  4. Next, they will divide this strip of the removed scalp into anywhere between 500 and 2000 tiny grafts (individual pieces of the removed scalp with 1 to 4 hairs), into which either individual hair is transplanted or a few batches of hair are added.
  5. The number of grafts they choose will depend on a few things such as the color of your hair, the size of your scalp, the area that needs hair, the quality of your natural hair, and the type.
  6. In the case of the FUE procedure, the surgeons typically shave the head at the back of your scalp and hair follicles are extracted one by one from this area, this leaves tiny dots in the head but can easily heal, and will be covered with the hair in any case, so not as visible to the naked eye.
  7. Once this stage is completed, and the grafts are prepped, the ongoing procedures will be the same, no matter which method out of the two they choose to go with. The surgeon will then numb the selected area where these will be placed.
  8. They then make tiny incisions with a needle or scalpel and with the utmost precision place each graft into each hole. In most cases, a team of surgeons will work on one head as it is time-consuming and needs to be implemented correctly and precisely.
  9. The time it takes will depend on the process and the area needed to be covered. On average you should be dedicating at least 8 hours aside for it. In the case where you want thicker hair, an additional procedure will be scheduled with the clinic at a later time.

Should You Consider a Hair Transplant Procedure in Turkey?

If you are not sure if you can or cannot request a transplant or any of the above-mentioned procedures, then it may be a good idea to check the list below for contenders that are usually considered for such procedures by various hair transplant clinics and surgeons, after an initial consultation:

  • If you are older than 25 years
  • If your hair loss is predominantly across the hairline
  • If you are free of any health conditions, such as high blood pressure, related conditions that may affect blood clotting, diabetes that has not been managed yet
  • If your hair loss is not caused by medication or stress
  • If your hair fibers are thick enough
  • If the color of your hair is close to your skin color

Hence, if you fall inside of any of the above, then you could be an acceptable candidate for a hair transplant in the majority of the countries that offer the services. A process like this is highly beneficial and even though it does not have any direct health-related advantages, it can significantly improve other aspects of your life such as your confidence levels, and of course your appearance.  There are also those who can ideally benefit from it, and after an initial evaluation these candidates include:

  • Females with diminishing or thinning hair
  • Men with ‘Androgenetic alopecia’ or male pattern baldness
  • Both male and female individuals who may have lost some of their hair from a scalp injury or a burn

However as lucrative as it is for many people, there are people that may not be able to get this procedure done and besides the list above related to health conditions that can hinder it, there are other aspects that are also taken into consideration by Turkish clinic doctors:

  • Those who are undergoing chemotherapy or taking specific medication and have hair loss as a result
  • Those individuals who do not necessarily have sufficient ‘donor’ hair sites from which to extract hair for the relocation
  • Women with a widespread pattern of hair loss throughout the scalp
  • People who may have formed keloid scars (fibrous, thick scars) after any other surgery or injury

Those who have taken the route of getting a hair transplant done in Turkey will be glad to know that your hair will continue to grow in those areas of the scalp that were once lacking. Depending on a few facets this re-growth will either be less dense or more. Factors that will affect it include:

  • How loose your scalp skin is. In other words its laxity
  • If you have curly hair
  • The quality of the hair or its caliber
  • How dense the follicles are in the areas where the transplant needs to be performed

In most cases, it is recommended to take a form of specific medication, such as finasteride or minoxidil, or even undergo mild laser therapy to benefit the growth, otherwise, you may risk continuous hair fall or hair loss in those areas on your scalp that have not been treated.

How to Choose the Right Hair Loss Treatment Clinic in Turkey

For those who have accomplished this process before, it may be easier to do it the next time around, depending on if you were happy with the initial results. However, if this is your first time, then the decision-making process should be a carefully thought out one.

Choosing the right place to get yours done is crucial and the right place should not only be high-quality and abide by the stringent standards of medical practices but also cost-effective for you in the long run.

Depending on the method that is right for you, and has been suggested to you by your doctor, knowing how to choose the right place to go is imperative, as you will need to visit it a few times. The below guide can help you choose the right hair transplant clinic in Turkey.

Finding a Surgeon in Turkey Who Is Qualified

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to find a surgeon who has the right qualifications as well as experience in performing this type of surgery. A reputable clinic and there are many in Turkey, will have medical facilities that have been internationally accredited with real-time modern technologies.

In Turkey, to date, there are over 45 Joint Commission International-Accredited hospitals. Possibly more than any other country on the globe. What to look out for, however, is those that are accredited by the ISHRS or International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

Even though a large number of people visit Turkey annually to get certain procedures and medical treatments done, the waiting list for most common procedures, including the hair transplants done in Turkey, is only about 2 weeks, it is however recommended to book them as soon as possible.

The medical organizations in the country are highly regulated by their government, and ensure that all policies surrounding compliance with the global healthcare standards are met. Everything from ethics, to modern equipment and technologies, up-to-date hygiene facilities and maintenance, certifications of all medical teams, and quality of care is kept precise and to standards.

One thing to keep in mind is, that because of the intensity and popularity of this type of treatment, the majority of all the hair transplant medical teams including practitioners, doctors, and surgeons are highly qualified and among the most experienced around the globe. Their expertise spreads across a number of different facets and types of hair.

For those who do not live in Turkey, booking a hair transplant procedure is as easy as in your own country. You will be glad to know that most of the staff who work in clinics and medical institutions speak English or are multilingual.

In any case, everything from a translator, to a medical tourism package is provided, which includes accommodation facilities (sometimes gratis), help with travel arrangements, high-quality care, and treatment options that are specifically designed for all patients, and from the word go, when you board onto your plane, till the time you arrive at your destination, everything is taken care for you.

Questions to Ask Your Hair Transplant Surgeon

Once you have found the right place, either by doing a google search, tapping into an online discussion forum under similar topics of ‘Hair Transplant in Turkey’ or by asking friends and family members for recommendations, it may help you feel better if you had a few questions that you can ask your surgeon as well.

Below are just a few of them to start you off on the right track.

  1. Ask them about their experience, and qualifications
  2. What type of transplant they would recommend for your particular issue and why
  3. Ask them how many transplants they have performed to date
  4. What are their patient satisfaction rates and can they refer you to any patients who have undergone the surgery?
  5. Ask them if there have ever been any complications with patients on whom they have performed a hair transplant
  6. In the event things go wrong, what follow up protocols should you follow, and will they help with it
  7. Will they prescribe medication once it is completed and how effective is healing?

After Your Hair Loss Treatment

There are a few things to expect after the treatment, which are typical of these types of procedures. However, not everyone will have them. During the healing process, some of these things you should find normal include:

Minor Inflammation or Swelling: this is very normal and the effects of this should disappear within the first few days, and one week at most.

Mild Bleeding: also, another normal occurrence is some minor bleeding within the lesions on your scalp, which will subside within 4 to 5 days. Surgeons do give you a head bandage or dressing to make sure it is kept free from any external dirt or bacteria, during the healing process.

Loss of Hair: as you can imagine, the hair that has been added to the new follicles, will drop off, as per a common occurrence. This typically happens after a few weeks and is usually caused by the ‘trauma’ or shock the scalp faces due to the surgery. For those who haven’t experienced this before, it can be daunting, but it is nothing to be afraid of.

This is only the dead hairs themselves that drop off, and not the follicles with them. This act makes way for new growth and before you know it, within the first 6 months, there will be a noticeable full growth on your scalp where there wasn’t any, to begin with.

Scabbing: before you get worried, know that scabs are good for your skin. The skin is a magnificent layer on our bodies and has its healing process. When you wound yourself, blood clots form at the surface to stop the flow of blood and dries out, this then becomes what is known as a ‘scab.’ It can take place very quickly, which is a good thing for your body and is responsible for protecting your body while it heals itself.

The reason for the scabs is to create a protective layer to enable the cells underneath to freely do what they know best i.e. repair the skin. After your hair loss procedure, the follicles will develop these scabs as part of its repair process, but will eventually fall off by themselves after one week to 10 days.

Besides the above normal indications, in the vent you had a strip graft is done, which calls for staples or stitches to be placed, these will need to be removed after 2 weeks, by the specialist.

What Does Recovery Time for A Hair Loss Treatment Entail?

When it comes to recovery time after the procedure has been completed. It is good to know that your scalp will be sensitive and as such you should take some painkillers for a few days after to help alleviate any pain. For at least one or two days after, your hair transplant specialist in Turkey will give you a bandage to put on your head.

Sometimes either an anti-inflammatory or an antibiotic is also prescribed for you to take over the course of a few days. There is almost always a high chance of recovery with these successful procedures and patients normally return to work within 2 to 5 days after.

Between 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery, the hair that’s been transplanted will fall out, however, new growth is noticed within a few months. In many cases, almost 60% of patients have seen new hair growth in as little as 6 months. Certain clinics will also prescribe a hair growth drug known as ‘minoxidil’ or ‘Rogaine’, which improves the growth of new hair after the transplant.

This then leads us to the discussion of how you, personally, should be looking after your newly fitted follicles.

How to Personally Care for Your Newly Implanted Follicles

At the time the procedure is completed, and the clinic sends you home, the specialist will give you carefully written out instructions, as well as specific medication, which should be taken as directed. This will significantly quicken the healing process as well as reduce the chances of things going wrong.

Alongside this, and as with all types of ‘injuries’ or surgeries, there are a few things that you should pay heed to aid your situation into a more comfortable one.

Here are some tips on how to care for your hair transplant when at home:

Keep Things Clean: First and foremost, you need to keep the site of the incisions clean at all times. You can wash your head after the surgery but very gently with a mild shampoo. Typically, you should wait for a day or two. This will help prevent any scabs from forming, more than the normal amount.

Try not to place your head directly under the showerhead for a couple of days, as sometimes the water pressure may dislodge the grafts. Only do this after 5 to 6 days if necessary.

Always make sure your hands are thoroughly cleaned before you touch any incisions or your head.

Take Your Medication as Prescribed: Always continuously use the medication prescribed to you and any other creams or anti-inflammatories, this will minimize any risk of infection to the area internally or externally.

To avoid discomfort, you may take a painkiller or two (typically prescribed to you when you are sent home) but double-check this with your clinic regarding the one you are using if they did not give you one. Avoid taking any Aspirin, and only take the ones that have been given to you. Aspirin can sometimes trigger bleeding as it is known as a blood thinner.

Sun Protection is Essential: do always protect your scalp from direct sunlight by wearing a large-cap or hat. Do not put on anything tight-fitting for the first 2 weeks at least, as blood flow can be inhibited during the healing process.

Don’t Itch or Scratch The Area: try not to touch your scalp or any part of your head in the event it gets itchy. If it is unbearable, get in touch with the clinic to ask for advice.

Rest and Relax: your body has been through something unusual so it is imperative that when you get home post-surgery, to get plenty of rest. You need both your scalp, mind and the rest of your body to be at ease after such procedures. Try spending at least 2 to 3 days in bed while resting.

When you do go to bed, attempt to sleep, or take a nap, make sure your head is alleviated at least a 45-degree angle for the first few nights. Thereafter you can resume your normal sleeping habits or pillow.

Sometimes investing in an orthopedic pillow can do wonders not just for your healing but also for the rest of your body and posture. This will also aid in reducing any swelling in the head.

Leave the Heavy Lifting for Later: try not to do any strenuous exercises or heavy lifting of any kind, this includes any physical activities such as jogging, going to the gymnasium, weight lifting, or even swimming in chlorinated water for that matter, for at least the first week after your surgical procedure.

Avoid Any Alcohol or Nicotine: after surgery, another advisable thing to do is to avoid drinking any forms of alcohol, as well as smoking any cigarettes for at least one week after i.e. 5 days.

Exposure to Dust: exposure to any forms of dirt or dust should also be evaded at all costs. If you work in an environment that is susceptible to this, take a few days off work, at least until the incisions are completely healed.

Do Not Use Appliances: any exposure to heat is a big no. This includes drying your hair using a blow dryer or using hair straighteners, for a minimum of one month after. This can severely damage things, and force you to go back to the clinic to get things rectified.

How Do You Prevent Hair Loss in Men and Women Naturally?

As we have mentioned in the above passages, hair loss can happen to anyone from a young age. Looking after yourself should always be the number one priority in your life.

Unfortunately, the advent of hair loss cannot always be completely avoided, no matter how hard you try, as sometimes it could be bad genetics and other times stress from your job, pregnancy, certain types of medication, or any underlying health conditions.

However, it never hurts to try. Besides getting a hair transplant treatment done in turkey, there are a few things you can do to help you towards keeping a healthy mane. The below general recommendations are some of the things you can try.

  • Try not to use too many hair styling appliances like blow dryers or hair straighteners and curlers
  • Stay away from hairstyles that pull your hair
  • Bleaching or chemically treating your hair can also lead to hair loss
  • Using mild shampoo, and one that is suited for your hair type is always better than those with harsh chemical ingredients in them
  • Low-level light therapy has been known to help some people and can promote cell growth
  • Always use soft brushes to brush your hair and start from the bottom going upwards when untangling knots
  • Try to use brushes with natural fibers can promote healthy oils in your hair
  • You can try using supplements such as Vitamin B12, zinc, vitamin E, folic acid also known as vitamin B9, vitamin B2 also known as riboflavin, and biotin known for stimulating ‘Keratin’ production in hair and follicle growth.
  • Essential oils, which are natural plant extracts, have been known to help with hair growth in some cases. However, it is still in its research stages and has only ever been tested on laboratory animals. Also keep note that you should only use them in small doses and in a diluted form, as they can be too harsh for the skin when used directly. Also, never consume them (eat or drink). Ones that have seen some differences include peppermint, lavender, ginseng, Chinese hibiscus, and ‘Jatamansi’.
  • Getting a scalp massage or massaging your own scalp regularly is also another way of stimulating blood circulation in your scalp. Studies have shown that getting a 4-minute head massage every couple of weeks can make some difference. Yet again, studies have only ever been done on a small controlled group.
  • Other factors to consider include your diet – making it healthy, getting some regular exercise, excessive smoking, and drinking.

The above suggestions are not to be undertaken after surgery or of any kind. These are mainly recommendations for people who have not had any hair transplant surgery of any kind. You should also note that if your hair loss is caused by genetics, it is unlikely that any of the above suggestions will help, besides opting for a hair loss treatment.

Hair loss has different appearances, and this will depend on the underlying issue or primary cause of it. Some people notice a widening of their parting on their head, other people have a more visible appearance of scalp showing, a good indicator is also hair loss on your hairbrush or in the shower. The typical amount as per research is between 50 to 100 hairs a day.

For others, their hairline starts to recede and if they have alopecia areata, this would be the more noticeable baldness where a coin-sized amount of scalp is visible or batches of hair fall off. If this is a concern for you, speak to your dermatologist or doctor about it and perhaps you should look into the treatment of getting a hair transplant done in Turkey. Not only is it cost-effective compared to other regions, but it is also done properly and professionally.

Hair Transplant Success Rates
