Rhinoplasty Surgery in Turkey

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a type of surgery that aims to reshape and enhance the appearance of your nose. It can change the shape, size or proportion of the nose, as well as improve breathing difficulties.

This procedure can correct concerns like a crooked nose, a nasal tip that you’re unhappy with, smooth out bumps, change the size of your nostrils and repair defects that are genetic or caused by injury.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the shape, structure or angle of the nose. This is done by making surgical changes to the bone, cartilage and tissue of the nose to achieve the desired result. This could be reducing or increasing the size of the nose, reshaping the nasal tip, narrowing the nostrils, or correcting nasal asymmetry.

How to prepare for Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Before Rhinoplasty surgery the doctor will do a full medical examination and check for any symptoms relating to nasal blockages, changes in sense of smell, blockages and nasal discharge. It is important to share any previous medical history and medications with the surgeon during the examination.

The surgeon may require that you avoid some of the following before surgery:

Stop smoking one week before surgery and during the recovery stage
Avoid topical creams at least four days before surgery
Abstaining from consuming alcohol one week before surgery

During the consultation with the surgeon it is important to take some example photos with you to help show any aesthetic preference you have for Rhinoplasty. The doctor will then be able to see what is possible and discuss the different options you have available.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

The rhinoplasty procedure involves making an incision between the nostrils (‘open rhinoplasty’), or inside the nostrils in what is called a known as ‘closed rhinoplasty’ process. Through these incisions, the surgeon can access the underlying nasal structures to reshape the nasal bones, cartilage and tissue as needed. It’s usually a 1.5-3 hour operation done under general or local anaesthetic. (1)

Open Rhinoplasty:
The incisions are placed between the columella (tissue between the nostrils) allowing the surgeon to lift the soft tissues and skin of the nose, This procedure is used to correct both functional and cosmetic deficits of the nose.

Closed Rhinoplasty:
This procedure is often used to re-shape the tip of the nose, dorsal hump reduction, nasal bridge augmentation or correction of nasal asymmetry. The nose is not fully opened during the surgery and the nasal structure is not exposed.

Rhinoplasty can be performed alongside Septoplasty, but this will need to be discussed with the surgeon and they will need to see if you are eligible for combined procdures.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Typically rhinoplasty takes 4-5 weeks to recover from, but this varies depending on individual healing and the extent of the procedure, and while most patients can resume normal activities within a week, complete recovery may take several weeks to months to see the final results and swelling to reduce. (2)

It is advised to avoid strenuous activities for up to 6 weeks, keep the nasal area clean and dry, avoid blowing the nose forcefully and refrain from wearing glasses or sunglasses that rest on the bridge of the nose.

Immediately following rhinoplasty, It is usual to have swelling, bruising, and discomfort around the nose and eyes. This is a normal part of the healing process and usually peaks within the first few days after surgery. It can take up to 6 months for swelling to totally subside, but it will reduce in the first few weeks.

After about one week, stitches can be removed, unless you’ve had dissolvable stitches, in which case they will take care of themselves. You will also have a split, gauze and packing to help support your new nose. The doctor will advise you on how and when to remove these.

The results from Rhinoplasty can be seen in a few weeks, but the final results can take up to 12 months.

Rhinoplasty Risks

All surgery comes with risks, so if you have any concerns before the operation you should seek advice from your doctor. Choosing a surgeon or clinic in Turkey with a good reputation can reduce the risks. (3)
