What is a Nose Job

A nose job, also known as rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to enhance the shape or functionality of the nose. Rhinoplasty is commonly done for aesthetic purposes but may also a structural issue, such as breathing or drainage, caused by an accident.

The rhinoplasty procedure can take anywhere up to 3 hours and patients are usually requested to stay overnight at the hospital for at least 2 nights. A dressing will be placed on your nose after the surgery for at least 12 hours. A splint is also attached to the nose for 7 days to hold things in place and allow you to breathe properly. Patients are given pain killers to help during the recovery period.

Because it is a complicated procedure, rhinoplasty  is considered one of the plastic surgery techniques where skill and surgical excellence is especially important. We have sourced the best aesthetic surgeons in Turkey to ensure beautiful long-lasting results.

What's the Rhinoplasty Process in Turkey?

Rhinoplasty is commonly a 1.5-3 hour operation done under general or local anaesthetic.

The surgeon will typically make an incision between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty), or inside the nostrils in what is called a ‘closed rhinoplasty’ process.

The essential process is to readjust the bone and cartilage underneath the skin. This is done via either removing bone/cartilage or adding it perhaps from other places on your body, such as the rib.

In the case of a functional rhinoplasty, the surgeon straightens the wall between two sides of the nose with the goal of improving breathing.

Depending on the complexity of the surgery, you will either leave later that day or perhaps the following day, once the anaesthetic has worn off.

Typical recovery time is 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure. However, to be able to notice the full changes in your appearance, you also have to wait for a few more weeks to let the scars heal.

Reduction or Augmentation Rhinoplasty in Turkey

Where patients choose a nose job for aesthetic reasons, surgeons will perform either a reduction rhinoplasty – to reduce the size of the nose – or an augmentation to increase it.

In fact, today’s surgeons are immensely skilled at refining and improving almost any nose shape. This will be discussed in great detail during the preparatory stages of the process, where you will work with the surgeon to plan the nose you want.

Commonly, clients choose a rhinoplasty because of these concerns.

  • Nose Bump: Perhaps it is genetics or a nose injury, but those who have a nose bump or as mentioned in the medical field ‘an overly pronounced dorsal hump’ often aesthetic enhancement.
  • Wide Nose, Hawk Nose, or Nubian Nose: A common facial trait in most East Asian, African Americans, and Hispanic communities this type of nose features an expansive nasal tip, broad nasal bridge, or wide nostrils.
  • Ptosis or Drooping Nose Tip: characterized by a drooping or sagging nose tip, which is typical of softer lower cartilage that does not have enough collagen, and which can often break down due to aging.
  • Aquiline Nose or Roman Nose: With a downward sloping tip, the roman nose is also a popular type of nose that many want to reshape. A characteristic of this type of nose is a prominent bridge that is slightly bent over. The surgeon can fix this by choosing to create an upturn on the tip of the nose and removing the prominent hump on the bridge.
  • Crooked Nose: Broken bones in the nose can often cause a crooked nose.
  • Saddle Nose or low Nasal Bridge: This is the condition that involves the loss of height or flattening of the bridge due to bone loss. It can happen with trauma or as an effect of a medical condition.
  • Greek Nose or Straight Nose: The type of nose that is referred to as a ‘Greek nose’ is usually one that has a straight bridge and narrow nostrils to match. Those who want this type of nose often get reduced in size and narrowed according to the proportions of their face.

Eligibility for Rhinoplasty Surgery in Turkey

You should be 18 years or older to consider a nosejob, as your nose may still be growing.

An exception, in this case, is when an infant has a defect around the nose area and in which case, the recommended route is for the surgeon to start fixing it to prevent any other complications and facial distortion in the future. A common cause of this type of situation is those babies who have cleft lip or palate.

Furthermore, patients should avoid smoking because it can severely affect the tissues around the nose which may lead to infection.

Being physically healthy before and after the rhinoplasty will provide peace of mind and expedited healing.

Non-Surgical Nose Job in Turkey

Some doctors use a non-surgical procedure known as a liquid nose job which uses hyaluronic acid as a filler placed in the bridge area of the nose. Specialised fillers can also hone in on unsightly bumps or lumps, plus create lift or volume to improve how the nose looks. This is a minimally invasive procedure under local anaesthetic.

Often chosen by those who are either nervous about surgery or seeking a more budget option, it is a quick and painless procedure that can deliver long lasting results.

Open Vs Closed Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is a more in-depth procedure allowing the surgeon to open the nose and look into the anatomy underneath. It can help with three things in particular:

  1. To analyze and properly measure the anatomy of the nose from the inside out. Any abnormalities or issues with the symmetry can be better noticed in comparison to doing just an external evaluation.
  2. Greater surgical precision
  3. In open surgery, most skilled surgeons use an advanced technique of grafting, which is more viable with this option. The grafts placed in the nose give long-term support and a better structure.

Although many rhinoplasty surgeons prefer an open surgery, the closed one is also a very viable solution. It is a less invasive surgery and comes with reduced recovery time and less visible scarring.

Altering the Nasal Bridge in Turkey

The Nasal Bridge is the longest part of anyone’s nose, starting at the eyebrows and running down to the tip of your nose. It is divided into two quadrants, namely the middle bridge and the upper bridge:

1. The Upper Bridge

Made entirely of bone, the upper bridge is the widest section of your nose, which sits between the eyebrows and narrows down to the middle of the nose or the middle bridge. Surgeons are able to narrow a wide bridge, fill in an indented bridge, minimize the dorsal hump, or widen a narrow bridge.

2. The Middle Bridge

This consists entirely of cartilage as opposed to bone. Most patients want a straighter and flatter middle bridge and in this too, a smooth transition is created with the cartilage between the middle bridge and the upper bridge.

Nasal deformities are also corrected, such as fixing a dorsal hump by removing excess cartilage or bone.

3. A Crooked Bridge

A third option that is also possible to correct by a cosmetic surgeon is a crooked bridge. The thin wall between the nasal passages or the nasal septum gets displaced in some people due to injury and leads to a deviated septum which can be remedied with the right nose job.

Nostril Correction Surgery in Turkey

  • Asymmetrical Nostrils: correcting asymmetrical nostrils is done by making incisions to widen, reshape or reposition the area around the nostrils and the majority of these are successful with the desired aesthetic result.
  • Wider Nostrils: Those who want to reduce the size of their nostrils if they are too wide, can opt for a surgery that entails the removal of nasal tissue in some parts, and is reshaped and adjusting it into position.
  • Narrow Nostrils: In this procedure, a graft, known as a ‘columellar strut’ enlarges the openings of the nostrils and also gives structure and strength to the nose. These collumelar grafts are created using cartilage from the patient’s septum, rib, or ear and can also be made using a synthetic material.

You must be fully aware of the risks of getting a nose job. Some of these include the following:

  • Experiencing a numb nose
  • Nosebleed
  • Scars around the areas of incision
  • Experiencing difficulty breathing
  • And other painful sensations that may arise from time to time.

Recovering Process from a Rhinoplasty

  • It may take up to 4 weeks for healing to be completed depending on whether you get the open or closed surgery. To see the full results, may take a couple of months. Some people claim that the swelling goes down after 6 months, but it depends on how well you look after yourself.
  • Usually, after one week, the surgeon takes out any stitches or sutures associated with the procedure. Unless you’ve gotten dissolvable stitches in which case a general checkup is scheduled. Anything such as a splint may also be removed.
  • Any bruises, redness, or swelling will start to subside after 3 weeks. However, it is crucial not to do any activities during this time such as swimming, sitting inside a hot bath / being around steam, or vigorous and high-intensity exercises. You must also, always be gentle when handling things like brushing your teeth or washing your face and the pressure of the shower on your nose must not be direct.
  • After 6 weeks you should be able to resume normal life but continue to sleep with your head elevated and avoid blowing your nose until the splint has been removed.
  • Avoiding any highly polluted areas with smoke or dust is advised and if you need to sneeze, do it from your mouth to avoid straining your nose. You may use an icepack very gently on the surrounding areas to help reduce swelling.

Summing up:

None of the above-mentioned procedures is a one-size-fits-all solution, so it is imperative to discuss things with our surgeons, and allow them to recommend the best procedure for you, including showing you how your nose will look after the procedure, and only if you are happy with it, should you go ahead with it. Also, note that you need to put time aside for recovery, which could be anywhere from 4 weeks on.
